Columbia Army Recruiting Company and the University of
South Carolina Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) worked together to create
the Army Strong Elite Football Combine. It was held at Westwood High School in
Columbia Saturday, June 6, 2015. Over 100 high school football players from
around South Carolina registered for this first ever event. “We wanted to give students
an opportunity to showcase their talents,” said Master Sgt. Sandra Powell, Recruiter
and coordinator of the combine.

Several current and former National Football League players offered
their time and talent to make the combine successful. The high school players
were tested on bench press, 40 yard dash, short shuttle, vertical, and broad
jump. NFL players worked one on one position drills with participants and
organized 7 on 7 scrimmages. Awards were given for each tested event and the
overall winner received a trophy.
“I really enjoyed this combine,” said New Orleans Saints
Defensive Tackle Kendrick Clancy. “Everyone
did a great job especially since it was the first one, “I hope to come back
next year.” Clancy is the cousin of Sgt. 1st Class Stephanie McLeod,
Sandhill Recruiting Center Commander.

Lt. Col. Barry Hale, University of South Carolina ROTC
Operations Officer, took time during the day to explain various Army benefits to include the updated March 2
Success program and the importance of planning to the participants’ parents. “This was
a great event, I look forward to this again next year,” said Hale.
“It was a long hot day, but the students, parents, and
coaches really seemed to appreciate our efforts. Many said it was the best
combine they have attended,” stated Powell.
