Why did you join the Army?
I
decided to join the military to be a role model and to gain discipline. I grew
up in Bishopville, S.C., where there is not much to do. Therefore, getting into
trouble became the norm for me and to be involved with trouble became fun. As a 15-year-old teenager, I would fight and
no matter how good my grades were in high school or how many sports I played, I
still found joy in fighting. One day,
one my teachers at Lee Central High School stopped me from fighting one day and
told me that I should join JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps). Maj.
Patrick McCewen was the JROTC instructor and after listening to him, I decided
that maybe joining JROTC would be a good decision for me. After one year of
JROTC, I noticed I was more responsible, I had discipline, and I no longer
looked at getting in trouble as fun but as ignorance. I finished four years in
JROTC and decided to join the Army. Maj. McCewen was my mentor and after
hearing his many Army stories and listening to his guidance about life, I knew
that the Army was a good place for me.
My decision was not based on money but to become a better person so that
I could also help someone else strive to be great as well.
Explain your Army job.
I am a Unit Supply Specialist stationed at 81st Regional Support Command at Ft. Jackson, S.C. I am
primarily responsible for supervising or performing tasks involving the general
upkeep and maintenance of all Army supplies and equipment.
What do you want to accomplish in the Army?
Soon, I will be attending a Warrior
Leader Course to enhance my skills as an Army Soldier. My long term goal is to become a great non-commissioned officer or perhaps an officer.
Tell us one Army experience.
An unforgettable moment would be the day
I graduated from basic training. I will never forget that moment because it was
the day my life completely changed. When
I stepped off the graduation field I was no longer a civilian, I was a Soldier.
I walked like a Soldier, I talked like a Soldier, and before anything else, I
thought as a Soldier. I will never forget that before anything I am an American
Soldier.
