Several Recruiters earned the Order of Francis Marion, a new
highly coveted battalion award. It can be earned on a phase line (Sullivan’s
Island Order of Francis Marion), quarterly (King’s Mountain Order of Francis Marion), semi-annual (Cowpens Order of Francis Marion), and
annual basis (Marion’s Men Order of Francis Marion).
The award is named for South Carolina’s own, Francis Marion,
the Swamp fox. This one man, a soldier, implemented guerrilla warfare to fight
the British Army, a tactic that broke from conventional warfare. Generally, the two armies would face each
other on an open field and trade shots. The American colonists and soldiers
loved him and he earned his nickname from the British soldiers.
He learned about the local Indians, how they fought and
survived in the swamp. He knew the
swamps like the back of his hand and it was said that he never got lost. There is no doubt that his childhood
development and subsequent years spent on and in swampy terrain would later
provide a significant advantage in the fight against the British. The key to winning battles in war is knowing
how to fight with and on the terrain.
This was a main factor in Marion’s success.
Congratulations to all!
