As one of the nation’s premier humanitarian organizations, the American Red Cross depends on the many generous contributions of time, blood, and money from the American public to support their lifesaving services and programs. Army Capt. Shawn Fitzgerald feels the Red Cross and the Florence Army Recruiting Company share common goals, particularly service to others.
Fitzgerald initiated a Florence Army Recruiting Company special blood drive at the McLeod Health and Fitness Center on Jan. 24 and invited other local military units to participate. Eight Florence Company Future Soldiers helped make the event a success by donating blood.
Future Soldier Jalessa Green was one of those who donated blood for the first time during the event. She joined the Army on Oct. 2, 2012; her job will be Automated Logistics Specialist and she leaves for Basic Training this February. She is very excited about becoming a Soldier and her contribution to the Red Cross is an example of one of the Army Values, Selfless Service.
Donations are what make the American Red Cross the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the U.S. The American Red Cross's goal for this blood drive was 25 units of blood and the Florence Recruiting Company event yielded 26 units. Thanks to the efforts of current and future soldiers, 78 people in the local community will benefit from the life-giving gift of blood.
