Reserve Recruiter Serves Her Country and Receives Tuition Assistance

            When making the decision to go into the military, often times, individuals believe that by making that decision they are forgoing a college education.   However, this is certainly not the case.  By joining the Army Reserves, individuals are able to serve their country while still working toward their college degree with financial assistance from the Army. Sgt. 1^st Class Syphonia D. Leggette is a prime example making the most of this opportunity.

            Legette spent her childhood summers with her aunt and uncle, who were stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C, so her exposure to military life started at an early age.  Before enlisiting in the Army Legette was attending Costal Carolina and was struggling to pay tuition.  Her financial struggles and previous exposure to the military made joining the Reserve an easy decision.

            Leggette joined the United States Army Reserves in 1999 as a Dental Specialist.  She completed her Army Basic Training at at Fort Sill, Okla.  and Advanced Individual Training at Shepard Air Force Base in Witchita Falls, Texas.  At the time of her enlistment, she was also training as an independent runner in track and field for competion on the national level.  She competed in both  400 meter and 800 meter events.

            After serving in the Army Reserves for eight years, Leggette decided to become an Army Recruiter and completed the Army Recruiter Course at Ft. Jackson in September of 2007.  She is now a Station Commander for the Myrtle Beach Recruiting Station.  Her previous assignments include the 885^th Medical Company, Florence, S.C., and 7236 MSU,  Ft. Bragg, N.C. As an Active Guard Reserve, she has served at the Rock Hill Recruiting Station, as an Army Reservse Recruiter and Assistant Station Commander.

            Leggette is a graduate of Coastal Carolina where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and is currently working toward a Master’s Degree in Professional Development and Counseling from Liberty Univeristy.  She has been married to Reginal L. Leggette for nine years and the two have a blended family of six children.

Myrtle Beach Recruiter Named 2nd Brigade Recruiter of the Year

Sgt. 1^st Class Tilton Washington, detailed recruiter in the Myrtle Beach Recruiting Station in S.C. is the 2^nd Brigade (2BDE) Recruiter of the Year.  There are over 2,500 non-commissioned officers, within the 2^nd Brigade, who are Army recruiters .  2BDE covers the southeast to include recruiting brigades in the following cities: Atlanta, Ga.; Baton Rouge, La.; Columbia, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Miami, Fla.; Montgomery, Ala.; Raleigh, N.C.; and Tampa, Fla. Part of the honor includes a trip to the All American Football Bowl game in January 2012 for Washington.

Washington has been in the Army for 14 years and as a detailed recruiter for three years.  He was first chosen to represent his company and went on to win the Columbia Battalion Recruiter of the Year title before being chosen to represent the entire 2BDE.  While winning the award is something he wanted very much and worked very hard for, he attributes his success to his team and his commanding officers. “Winning these types of awards is a team thing. Having a strong team helps you to succeed in these types of situations.  I attribute all of my success to my team and Command Sgt. MAJ. Stephen Bowens for believing in me and knowing that I was capable of winning this award for our brigade.”

What comes next for Washington stems from his firm belief in leading soldiers.  He will be leaving Myrtle Beach and Army Recruiting to lead soldiers in the Second Infantry, Third Brigade at Fort Lewis, Washington.
